Further education and lifelong learning are fundamental in the 21st Century, for every kind of extra qualification enhances individual personal development and increases your career prospects.

Some German states have standardized further education incentives in their employment rights. This kind of further education incentive takes shape as so called educational leave (Bildungsurlaub BU) and is thus a solid and very important part of the German education system. The basic requirement for your being entitled to educational leave is the recognition of the Italian language course in the German state in which you are registered.

As there are no standard regulations concerning educational leave, you should ask your employer if this kind of further education is also available in your company.

What is educational leave?

Educational leave employees the chance to further their education on 5 calendar days a year.

Educational leave means you are given leave from work while your salary continues to be paid as you attend a course at a recognised institute. A language course also falls into the category of this kind of further education.

Depending on German state , it is expected that certain criteria and requirements be fulfilled by the school. The German states allowing educational leave check the respective language schools and their language courses for the following standards:

  • Quality of the teachers and professors at the language schools
  • Quality of the material/equipment at the language schools
  • Quality of the method of learning at the language schools
  • Quality of the didactic lesson concept in the language courses

The certified language courses with this seal of quality can be used as educational leave.
